Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale
Tool designed to assess 9 symptoms common in cancer patients: pain, tiredness, nausea, depression, anxiety, drowsiness, appetite, well-being, and shortness of breath, as well as any other problem. The patient rates the severity at the time of assessment of each symptom on a visual analog scale from 0 (absent) to 10 (worst possible severity). The ESAS is useful in assessing symptom control in patients receiving palliative care. For more information, see the following Web site for the scale: http://www.cancercare.on.ca/common/pages/UserFile.aspx?fileId=13262.
