patients included in the studies) that you have high-quality evidence of
a large effect of magnesium in reducing the need for hospitalization
in patients with asthma. You therefore administer 2 g of magnesium
sulfate intravenously, in addition to bronchodilators and corticosteroids.
Three hours later, the patient is feeling a little better, and you
admit her to a well-monitored unit. During the next 48 hours, the
patient improves and is discharged home on the third hospital day,
with the strongest possible counsel to find a new home for her cat...."
